How to clean football kit

Maxi was born in Reading and so is a Reading football supporter and has a Reading football kit which consists of a white and royal blue hooped top and white and royal blue shorts.  I have never had any issues getting grass stains out of it, however, this last month I was challenged with what seemed like immovable mud.  I have no idea what was different about this mud, but it evaded all my usual tricks.  So I put out a shout on twitter and facebook for ideas on how to get the mud out and I was given a range of ideas:


  1. Wash the kit as soon as possible
  2. Rub a small amount of washing up liquid on to the stain before washing. scrub the area with a clean toothbrush
  3. Always use biological washing products for football kits
  4. Use a stain remover to pretreat before washing  and add it to the wash
  5. Soak in cold water with soda crystals
  6. NEVER use fabric softener
  7. NEVER tumble dry
  8. Line dry in direct sunlight, which can help fade any stain

    I second the sunlight tip - its amazing what that shifts! My Dad managed my little brother's footie team for a while, so my Mum had to wash the entire kit. Every week. You can imagine how popular that was!

    My boys are the same, but I only use vanish seems to work. Bicarb also works well I add it to the soap powder. x

    Its like you read my mind! You appear to understand a lot about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I feel that you just can do with a few percent to power the message house a bit, but other than that, this is great blog. A fantastic read. I'll certainly be back.

    Thanks for your useful article.I run a launderette have no time with thirty plus kits a week to wash in my opinion before washing get a spray bottle out about seven squirts of bleach add water to fill spray stained areas leave about thirty minutes to one hour then wash on hot when the bio powder hits the bleach stains are removed or wash kit on low first to get rid of mud then spray stains works really well on all colours provided you only spray stains and don't leave to long also tumble dry on medium heat for about twenty mins won't ruin the kit ok . Look forward to quick easy cleaning of your football kits.

Dumping the tumble dryer and Ecoforce giveaway
